GIS Manager, Manila Water Company, Inc. Philippines

As the (very young) head of GIS development at Manila Water, Melanie Abuel leads a team that serves 6M people while managing the assets of 6000 km of pipes and 250 facilities. In addition to database and GIS mobile application development, her team works on UAV and lidar for BIM implementation and big data analytics.

Melanie is also a risk-management specialist in plate tectonics and earth movement. Her Earthquake Impact and Risk Reduction Study of the East Zone of Metro Manila for Manila Water won an excellence award; indeed, the award-winning projects she has completed are too numerous to list here.

Her current main project is the linear asset management (AM) component of the enterprise AM project for Manila Water, which integrates GIS with project systems, plant maintenance, and multiple business intelligence resources. She also leads Manila Water’s geospatial application development unit.
