Surveying’s “ambassadors” to related professions and industries help elevate the stature of the profession; James R. Nicolau serves in such a role. As the son of a business owner and professional land surveyor, James was introduced to the profession at a young age. With every new piece of technology that his father’s company acquired, his training increased.

Since becoming licensed as a professional land surveyor in California, he has pushed the limits of using 3D laser scanning into areas that had been largely untapped, and he’s helped develop field-to-finish routines to make more efficient use of the acquired data.

 James is secretary of the San Diego chapter of the California State Land Surveyors Association for 2016. He’s also a member of the American Council of Engineering Companies and state and national realtors associations, where he keeps in touch with other facets of the industry and shares the valuable expertise and services surveyors provide.
